The name of our parish in its initiation was St. Brigid to honor one of the patron saints
of Ireland. Our parish was founded in 1867 as an outpost mission for the Irish immigrants who came to work in the
mills run by Samuel Williston. Mr. Williston realized that the Irish would not come to Easthampton unless they had a
place to worship, so he arranged purchase of the land (for $1.00) on which our church and buildings are now located.
During the first 14 years of the parish, the church building burned down twice. The third time it was
rebuilt, it was decided to rename the parish "Immaculate Conception." Our cemetery dates back to 1885
when Fr. Walshe opened it with a 13-acre parcel. The name of the cemetery was kept St. Brigid to honor the Irish
roots of the parish.
Catholic cemeteries are a long-standing ministry of the church; the cemeteries are intended to be religious in character.
The church provides cemeteries to help people face the hard reality of death in the context of the promise of eternal life.
If interested in purchasing a cemetery plot in St. Brigid's, please contact the parish office to request
a copy of the regulations guiding the use of the cemetery grounds. Included in the brochure are clearly stated policies
that standardize the usage of the cemetery regarding memorials and flowers to honor loved ones.
